Synthesized under a reflux process, 2,4,4′-trichloro-2′-methoxydiphenyl ether is treated with aluminium chloride. Triclosan can be synthesized through a three-step process starting with 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyrrolidin-2-one. The 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyrrolidin-2-one is dehydrated with either zinc or calcium oxide into 1-vinylpyrrolidin-2-one.
